How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game that involves betting between players. Each player puts in a bet (representing money) into the center of the table and attempts to make a high ranking poker hand that wins the pot. Poker is most commonly played with six, seven or eight people.

When a person is their turn, they have the option to either call the bet that the person before them made or raise their own. When the person before you bets $10, say “call” or “I call” to match their amount of money and place your own chips into the pot. If you want to raise the amount of money that is in the pot, say “raise” and continue raising your bets until everyone calls or folds.

The highest poker hand is a royal flush which contains four cards of the same rank in a single suit. The next highest poker hand is a straight which contains 5 consecutive cards of the same suit. The third highest poker hand is a three of a kind which contains 3 matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank. The lowest poker hand is a pair which contains 2 distinct cards of the same rank.

Poker is considered a game of chance when nothing is at stake, but it gains a lot of skill and psychology when bets are involved. It is also a great social game and a way to meet new people.
