The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played with bets that are placed into a “pot” in the center of the table. Betting continues in rounds with each player having the option to call (match the amount bet), raise, or fold. The player with the best 5 card poker hand wins the pot. Sometimes there is a tie, and the players share winnings. The game has a very high element of luck, but there is also a great deal of skill required to win over the long term.

There are many variations of poker, but they all have a common core of rules. The game is generally played with a standard deck of 52 cards, and some games include jokers or other wild cards. Standard poker hands contain five cards and are ranked in order of highest to lowest: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6.

Before any bets can be made in the game, each player must ante up (amount varies by game) and then be dealt two cards face down. After the ante phase of betting, 3 cards are dealt face up in the center of the table, called the flop. These are “community cards” which all players use to make their hands. Then another round of betting happens, and then a final card is dealt face up on the river – the last card in the game. If the player has the best 5 card poker hand, they win all of the money that was put down as buy-in at the table.
